Millions in Funding for Great Lakes Harmful Algae Bloom Research

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Co-Chair of the House Great Lakes Task Force, announced $1,777,440 in federal funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support five Great Lakes harmful algal bloom (HAB) research projects. These research projects which will be carried out at several area universities will provide a better understanding of the causes and impacts of HABs, enhance HAB monitoring and response, and improve technologies for preventing, controlling and mitigating HAB events.

Infrastructure Bill includes $1 Billion for Great Lakes Restoration

One the many considerable investments outlined in the bipartisan infrastructure and jobs act includes $1 billion in federal funding for Great Lakes restoration efforts. One billion will go to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).

The GLRI is a continuing initiative of 16 federal organizations, as well as many other partnering agencies, launched in 2010 to identify and address the most serious issues threatening the ecological and economic wellbeing of the Great Lakes basin, such as invasive species, harmful algal blooms and other toxic pollution.

Since its inception, the GLRI has received about $3.8 billion and thus far awarded nearly $3 billion of that to fund more than 6,000 projects researching and addressing those issues directly.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, however, marks the largest amount of funding the GLRI has received from a single piece of legislation.
